Visual Impact of Feminist Protest

March 8th Poster

The “Bündnis 8. März Halle” (Alliance March 8th Halle) organizes the Feminist Struggle Day demonstration in Halle (Saale). Each year, different allies create the design. In 2024, communication designers Eva Dietrich and Maite Schönherr collaborated on the poster and sticker design, also creating a new logo in the process.

The “Bündnis 8. März Halle” sees itself as an intersectional feminist alliance and was formed a few years ago to organize the March 8th demonstration with a network of partners and individuals. For the past two years, the group has also hosted workshops, readings, and film nights. The organization operates on a voluntary basis, with plenary meetings and working groups. One group focuses on public relations, deciding together which media are needed to mobilize for the demonstration. They chose posters, stickers, and Instagram for digital outreach.

In addition to the media used for mobilization, the public relations group also determines the demonstration’s motto, content, and key design elements for the poster. This collaborative approach allows for joint decision-making and experimentation with feminist design practices.

In 2024, the Feminist Struggle Day demonstration in Halle carried the motto “No feminism without anti-fascism - together against rights and patriarchy.” The Alliance called for a multilingual poster to engage more people than in previous years and to make the demonstration and related events more accessible, fostering a stronger, more united presence on March 8th.

Visual Impact
The design communicates the alliance’s demands each year, supporting mobilization and creating visibility in urban spaces. The 2024 logo promotes a sense of belonging and has been positively received and widely used.

This year, significant efforts were made to display posters throughout the city, shaping the cityscape in the weeks before and after March 8th. The strong visual presence of the alliance’s demands motivates people to unite in solidarity and take a clear stand against the rightward shift in Germany. The introduction of multilingual posters was well received by Halle residents, generating positive feedback.

The bright colors of the poster stand out, attracting attention. The large letters “8. März“ clearly communicate the poster’s purpose from a distance, while a clear hierarchy organizes the text, ensuring the information is conveyed concisely without overcrowding. All languages are integrated on equal footing. Eva Dietrich and Maite Schönherr formed the core group of the alliance in the design process, welcoming regular feedback and criticism.

Consultations with activists from other working groups were essential for gathering information and making adjustments. The final design decision rested with the two designers. Communicating the possibilities and limitations of the design to the group was central to the process. Collaborative design as a feminist practice has been tried and successfully implemented.
