Visual Impact of Feminist Protest

Generation Equality

In 2021, Noa Poljak created an illustration for the UN Women “Generation Equality” competition, organized in collaboration with the European Commission. This global competition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, attracted over 1,200 young artists from more than 120 countries. It provided a platform for the younger generation to contribute to the global movement for gender equality.

Poljak’s experiences living across various parts of Europe revealed the persistent influence of conservative values even in developed regions. These values, echoing historical patterns, continue to foster oppression, injustice, and discrimination. Her work highlights the critical and ongoing struggle for gender equality, emphasizing that the fight must continue unabated.

Visual Impact
As the illustration was chosen into the finals, it was prominently displayed at the Forum in Paris and at Place de la Monnaie in Brussels in 2021, where it reached both the general public and event participants. It was also published on various websites and widely shared on Instagram. The vibrant and dynamic design underscores the obstacles and setbacks women face in their pursuit of equal recognition and success. By depicting the extra effort, persistence, and skill required for women to achieve parity with men, the illustration effectively conveys the systemic barriers in both career and family life.

Noa Poljak, who does not identify as a professional artist, used this opportunity to engage in the global feminist movement. Her work demonstrates that impactful contributions can come from individuals of all backgrounds and professions, reinforcing her belief that anyone can—and should—make a difference.
