Visual Impact of Feminist Protest

Vum & Gitterz

“Vum” and “Glitterz” are collectives of skateboarders who do not fit into the traditional norm. Female, non-binary, gay skaters from all over Europe have joined forces to create an output for their passion.

“We capture ourselves on the streets of European cities such as Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Valencia through video, photography and drawings.” A creative output emerges from encounters with public spaces while spending time in arbitrary spots throughout the city. These artistic expressions and collected street skateboarding are shown at art exhibitions and video screenings.

Exhibitions and screenings play a crucial role in their mission, offering a platform for FLINTA* (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans, Agender) skateboarders to assert their identities. By showcasing interdisciplinary works, from visuals to sound, the exhibitions highlight the diversity of experiences within skateboarding and encourage participants to explore and document their identities. This approach fosters a collective artistic dialogue, where each skater’s perspective contributes to a broader narrative of navigating skate culture as a non-traditional participant.

Visual Impact
The creative process also acts as a form of activism. By taking to the streets with bold self-expression—whether through clothing, body language, or physical presence—these skateboarders carve out space to challenge binary norms. The medium of skateboarding, paired with their multimedia documentation, amplifies visibility for marginalized voices within a historically male-dominated space. The resulting artwork, ranging from videos to mixed-media installations, embodies both the joy and the struggle of carving out an authentic identity in the public realm.
